Το Workshop απευθύνεται σε DJs και μουσικούς που είτε αναζητούν ώθηση στα πρώτα βήματα της μουσικής δημιουργίας, είτε έχουν αποκτήσει εμπειρία στο music production με χρήση DAW στον υπολογιστή, περιφερειακών midi controllers και hardware electronic instruments.

Το workshop θα χωριστεί σε δυο μέρη:

Στο πρώτο μέρος (αφορά σε απλούς ακροατές κι ενεργούς συμμετέχοντες), θα γίνει παρουσίαση / συζήτηση των σταδίων στησίματος ενός Live Set με βασικό setup: Ableton Live (session mode), external midi controllers (parameters assignment), external time base hardware (drum machines, synth sequencers, computer network, smartphones -synchronized with midi/ableton link).

Στο δεύτερο μέρος του Workshop (αφορά στους ενεργούς συμμετέχοντες), θα στηθεί ένα αυτοσχέδιο collaboration, με στοιχεία improvisation και experimentation. Δημιουργώντας όλοι μαζί́ μια Live Performance με ιδέες, περιεχόμενο και συνδεσμολογίες του Live Set που θα σχεδιαστούν on the fly.                                                

Α’ ΜΕΡΟΣ

Θα παρουσιαστούν και θα συζητηθούν μέσα από ανοικτές ερωτήσεις, όλα τα στάδια του στησίματος ενός Live Set:

1. Πρώτο Στάδιο (Inspiration):

Η αρχική́ έμπνευση – ώθηση, το ξεκίνημα της όμορφης περιπέτειας δημιουργίας ενός Live Set, τα θετικά́ της “άχρονης δημιουργίας” (ableton session mode). Αναζητώντας απαντήσεις στην ερώτηση γιατί́ να στήσω ένα live set αντί́ ενός ακόμη “desktop” music production track με τη γνωστή́ γραμμική́ χρονική́ διάσταση, αναμενόμενα αρχή́ μέση και τέλος (arrangement). Βασικό κίνητρο, θέλω να παίξω ηλεκτρονική́ μουσική́ ζωντανά́.                                                                    

2. Δεύτερο Στάδιο (Creative Setup):

Αναζητώντας το μουσικό περιεχόμενο, υλοποίηση των loops-θεμάτων που θα αποτελέσουν τη βάση του Live Set. Μidi/Audio live recording τεχνικές και creative procedures, (modulation-experimentation), εφαρμογή mangling algorithms-η αξία της τυχαιότητας (ableton audio clip editing tools-midi/audio plugins- max for live). Αξιοποίηση για πρόσφατες ή παλαιότερες μουσικές ιδέες που βρίσκονται στα “αποθηκευμένα projects” του σκληρού δίσκου. Sound design, sampling τακτικές.

3. Τρίτο Στάδιο (Performance):

Ableton Session Mode Visual Form, εργονομία και προγραμματισμός του set και των στοιχείων του (beat, melodic, sfx, improvisation elements) στον άξονα Χ/scenes, Υ/tracks, ώστε να λειτουργήσει διεπαφικά και βολικά για τον performer με καίριους χειρισμούς́ς τη στιγμή του Live και με συνετή χρήση της CPU. Δημιουργικό́ “artistic” parameters assignment των live midi instruments και audio fx’s routines με external midi controllers. Synchronization και έξυπνος preset προγραμματισμός των time base hardware instruments (drum machines, synth sequencers). Πρόγραμμα καθημερινής ενασχόλησης/πρόβας του set, εξάσκηση του improvisation, adjustments με διαπιστώσεις και καταγραφή σημειώσεων προόδου και προσωπικής ικανοποίησης πως όλα τα μουσικά στοιχεία και οι χειρισμοί́ λειτουργούν σε όλα τα επίπεδα, νοητικά́/ψυχικά́/πρακτικά́ για ένα δημιουργικό́ Live Performance.                                                                                                                                              

Β’ ΜΕΡΟΣ

Performance με μουσικό σύνολο

1. Μουσικό φρασιολόγιο και επικοινωνιακή ανάπτυξη εκτέλεσης μουσικής. Προφορικές και κινησιολογικές εκφράσεις για έλεγχο και προσανατολισμό στις δυναμικές, κίνηση και δομή ενός κομματιού. Ατομική και ομαδική ενέργεια σε ένα μουσικό σύνολο, πως να εξελίξεις τις ιδέες σου εντός και εκτός του ρόλου σου μεταξύ δόμησης και περιεχομένου.
2. Τόναλ και Ατοναλ – Θεωρία μουσικής και κίνηση. Πώς να εφαρμόσετε την ομοφωνία και την παραφωνία στη μουσική σας. Εργαλεία midi και τεχνικές εφαρμογές για κίνηση στην αρμονία της μουσικής.
3. Τεχνικές ανάπτυξης μουσικών ιδεών. Ανταλλαγή και δανεισμός μουσικής πληροφορίας μεταξύ ήχου και midi

The workshop is aimed for DJs and musicians who either developed their first steps in music creativity or they have already established some experience in Digital Audio Workstations (DAW), midi hardware controllers or hardware electronic music instruments.

The workshop will be split in two sections. The first section is directed for people who are interested in fully understanding the principles of digital audio workstations in a Live set scenario through Ableton Live in Session mode, setting up midi controllers, adjusting parameters and assignments, external time base hardware as drum machines, synth sequencers, computer network, smartphones and synchronicity with Ableton Link.

The second part of the workshop is aimed for the active participants of the workshop. Participants will be able to discover the concept of live electronics in music

exploring the possibilities of a live scenario in collaboration through the depth of experimentation and improvisation

Part A

Presentation and open Q&A for all the steps of building a live set

1. Inspiration:

The initial inspiration derives from the adventure of creating a live set in Ableton Live. By understanding the differences between session and arrangement mode, the participants will be able to answer the initial question of why should I create music in a non linear time manner with the primal motivation of playing live electronic music

2. Creative setup:

Searching and executing musical context by understanding the basic concepts of loop based subjects of which they will play a main strategic role in creating structures of a live set. Additionally, we will explore the techniques of Midi/Audio live recording and creative procedures as modulation, applying probability algorithms, editing audio clips, midi tool kits, plugins and maxforlive applications. Moreover, we will explore the utilization of older musical elements and ideas that might be saved on our hard drive from previous projects, explore in depth sound design and sampling techniques.

3. Performance:

Explore the visual form of Ableton Session Mode for maximum efficiency and ergonomic structures in programming elements of the live set such as beat, melody, sound effects and improvisation elements through a X/Y axis with X indicating the scenes and Y indicating the tracks in order for the performer to be in total control of the set and also in control of CPU performance of the computer. Smart and intelligent mapping parameters for midi instruments and fx routines through external midi controllers. Synchronicity and smart preset management for time based instruments such as drum machines and synth sequencers. Daily enrollment and good practice routines, improvisation approaches, personal adjustments with personal calendar documentation in order to develop a personal progress in music development, control and development in the levels of mental/physical and practical strength for a creative Live performance.

Part B

Performance in ensemble

1. Ensemble vocabulary and communication techniques for playing music. Verbal and gesture expressions for control over dynamics, groove and structure. Individual and ensemble actions in a group, how to effectively stay in and out of your role between layers and context.
2. Tonal vs Atonal – Music theory and flow. How to implement key context, consonance and dissonance in your music. Midi tools and techniques for tension and release in music theory and harmony.
3. Working against the creativity block. Exchanging or borrowing musical information through audio and midi tools
